Trapped on Mars for over a decade, Ryan Selkirk has long since abandoned any hope of return. The knowledge that other people are out there, somewhere, keeps his sanity intact, if threadbare. He performs his experiments, tends his garden, reads his Bible. Routine. Monotonous.
Every twenty-six months, Mars and Earth are on opposite sides of the sun. During this time communication between them is impossible, and for two weeks Ryan feels like the last human in the universe. What if those two weeks passed and, instead of a scratchy message from Earth, Ryan was confronted with silence? A lot can go wrong sending messages between planets, and there's not a lot a lone astronaut can do to fix it. What if the silence became permanent, if Ryan found himself cut off from humanity, in mind as well as body, for the rest of his life? How could anyone cope with that?

Not as polished as Andy Weir's The Martian,The Furies of Mars has more personality. Where Weir's book leans towards technical detail over the human element Stamp's is the opposite. The Martian's lead is an all too typical hero seemingly capable of anything except passing a Turing test where The Furies of Mars has a protagonist that is wacky enough to have no problems qualifying as human, fallible with odd quirks. An author worth keeping an eye on. Recommended.Product details

The Furies of Mars eBook William Stamp Reviews
Great book, only wish it had been longer!
Despite what edward may think, this short story takes a journey through the protagonist as he struggles to survive on a distant planet. What are his thoughts? What keeps him going? How does one deal with solitude? All of these issues are addressed in such a thought-provoking matter, that it made me reflect on my own very experiences.
Truly awesome and amazing.
I enjoyed The Furies of Mars very much. I found it to be very emotional but in the right ways. This short story kept me hooked and I was able to start and finish it on a slow day at work. And despite it's brevity, it triggered a small existential crisis. Definite read.
This story is amazing. I cannot stress how complex and thought provoking it is. I LOVED it. Will Stamp writes an incredible story. I cannot wait to read more of his work. Get this book.
I became so absorbed with this book that I could feel as though I was traveling with the author. Loneliness, day to day task he takes us through what life has become. It may be another planet, another city, or country but so much loneliness exists. The author has a style that I have not read in so long. This may be a short book but take it slowly and read every detail. This one will really make you think for a long time. Please, give me more........exceptional writing and thought process of this author.
I was a big fan of The Martian by Andy Weir. So much so that I wanted to look for similar Sci-fi stories, and came upon Stamp's book.
Wow.
The Martian tends to be a little light hearted, and thus loses some of its impact(in my opinion). The Furies of Mars goes right for the actual struggle and potential psychological break of someone who would be stranded on mars, and does so with fluid elegance and delightful twists. I would recommend this book to anyone, ranging from my 86 y/o grandfather to my 10 y/o niece.
I liked this short story. This is hard science fiction in that it focuses on the philosophical. A marooned planet explorer comes to terms with eternal loneliness knowing he will never see another living soul. This is a real possibility as we push further in our manned space exploration.
I appreciate science fiction that is intellectual, so much modern science fiction isn't. Bravo.
